The Three Privacy Tiers
Understanding privacy settings is crucial if you are building courses or organizing internal team materials.
Public
Anyone can search for and find your collection. It will appear on your channel page and in search results. Use this if you are a creator trying to maximize views.
Unlisted
This is the hidden gem of privacy settings. The collection will not show up in search results or on your channel page. However, anyone who has the exact URL can view it and share it. This is perfect for sharing a curated list with a specific class or study group.
Private
Only you and the specific Google accounts you invite can view the collection. If someone clicks the link without being logged into an authorized account, they will hit an error wall.
Note on API Tools
If you are using a Length Calculator or a scheduling tool to find the duration of a collection, the privacy must be set to Public or Unlisted. The YouTube API cannot read Private data without a complex OAuth login flow.
